Sherwood was incorporated in 1892 and was given its name because the forests near the town reminded the founding city fathers of England's Sherwood Forest. Sherwood and the surrounding area offer many points of interest, attractions and things to do.

May is the month that features events such as the Community Services Fair, the Migratory Songbird Festival and the Mustang Madness 5k. During the summer months, Sherwood Saturday Market is held at the Veteran's Memorial Park in Old Town. Cruisin' Sherwood, held in June, offers a look at historic Old Town. Music on the Green is held at Stella Olsen Park during August. The Sherwood High School drama club presents a number of performances during the year. The library has a summer program for children. Make a Difference in Sherwood, Refuge Appreciation Day, and the Great Onion Festival are held in October. The Old Town Holiday Celebration is held in December.

Washington County has miles of biking and hiking trails. To see the county from above, hot air ballooning offers panoramic views. Rivers, museums and historic sites, golf courses, restaurants and shopping areas abound. Oregon's wine country is located in Washington County. Wineries offer tastings and tours. Many of the wineries are family owned and some have winemaking classes.

The Klamath Mountains and the Cascades are nearby. Mt Hood, in the Cascades, has excellent skiing. The lodge at Mt. Hood was used in the movie "The Shining." However, it is not the frightening place the movie makes it out to be. The rooms are comfortable, and food and drink is available in front of the massive yet elegant fireplace.

Another premiere spot for outdoor activities is the Columbia River. Wind surfers from around the world come to play in the Columbia River Gorge where winds can exceed 60 miles per hour. The drive along the Gorge is breathtaking. Bring a camera because waterfalls of all description are right next to the road. Gift shops offering local products, including jams, candy and salmon are located near many of the waterfalls. Fishing is good on the Columbia, as it is on the Willamette River and the Hood River. Fish hatcheries offer tours, and at the Bonneville Fish Hatchery and Dam there is a viewing area to watch salmon spawning as well as a visitor center and interpretive displays. The Bridge of the Gods, an engineering marvel, connects Oregon to Washington near the Bonneville Dam.

The Pacific Ocean is a short drive away. Hiking and walking trails are located on the bluffs above the ocean and down to the shore. Towns along the beaches offer shopping and restaurants.
